Poikiloderma-it’s a peculiar word that rolls off your tongue and is kind of fun to say.  And although it may sound like the name of a prehistoric animal, it’s something you’ve either seen or perhaps even have yourself.

Poikiloderma of Civatte

First described in 1923 by French dermatologist Achilles Civatte, Poikiloderma (Poikilo-varigated) derma (skin) is a skin condition affecting the neck and decolletage and is characterized by its ruddy brown or mottled appearance, and the thinning of the skin. Some people experience an itching or burning sensation.

It appears on both sides and the lower half of the neck, and because the chin acts as a sun shield, there is a patch of skin directly underneath the lower jaw that remains unaffected. You can see it in the above photo.

What causes Poikiloderma?

There are several factors that are believed to cause Poikiloderma, with excessive sun exposure being the most common.  Genetic predisposition is also thought to play an active role in Poikiloderma as are the hormonal changes in both peri and post menopausal women.  And  the  photosensitizing components in perfumes and cosmetics worn or sprayed on the neck area, which make skin more susceptible to UV radiation, are also linked to Poikiloderma.

So if you are in your 40′s or 50′s, have fair skin, neglected to apply sunscreen on your neck and liberally spray your Chanel around your pulse points, you may already have or develop this chronic skin condition.

How can you treat Poiklioderma?

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is the best treatment option, and we’ve had great results. IPL works by targeting the melanin and capillaries in the skin responsible for the distinctive coloring of Poikiloderma.  A small hand piece which emits light-waves is gently passed over the skin and only damages the melanin and hemoglobin, which are then gradually absorbed by the body.

You may feel a stinging or pinching feeling during the IPL treatments, but most clients tolerate it well.

We also have terrific SkinMedica (R)  products that we’ll recommend-including products loaded with anti-oxidants, Retinol, and, of course, sunscreen.

Our clinicians will discuss treatment options and recommend an individualized plan for optimal results, which may involve one or more treatments.
